Rep. Glenn Thompson’s gay son got married on Friday. A few days before, his father was voting against the Respect for Marriage Act.
This Republican lawmaker had the audacity to show up at his son’s wedding with another man after voting against a House bill that would codify federal protections for same-sex marriage just three days before the event.
Thompson’s son, who wishes to remain anonymous along with his now-husband, mentioned in an interview for NBC News on Monday that he had married the love of his life and was extremely elated, and that his father had been present that day.
The lawmaker’s press secretary, Maddison Stone, also confirmed that he was in attendance on Friday.
“Congressman and Mrs. Thompson were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life,” Stone said in an email, mentioning how happy the Thompsons are to welcome their new son-in-law into the family.
Stone also said that the Respect for Marriage was “nothing more than an election-year messaging stunt for Democrats in Congress who have failed to address historic inflation and out of control prices at gas pumps and grocery stores.”
As of now, Glenn Thompson has not made a public statement regarding the wedding or his contradictory actions of voting against the protection of the right to get married that allowed his son to celebrate with the love of his life on Friday.
