Candidate Profile: Mike Siegel for Texas Congressional District 10

Progressive candidate Mike Siegel is running for Texas Congressional District 10, after defeating moderate candidate Pritesh Gandhi in the Democratic Primary runoff election in July. He faces incumbent Republican Congressman Michael McCaul, who has held the seat since 2005, in a repeat matchup. In 2018, Siegel ran against McCaul and came within 13,132 votes. With the changing demographics of Texas and higher voter participation in presidential election years, Siegel hopes he has what it takes to flip the district blue. He isn’t the only one, this district was recently declared a target by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

“After attending law school, Mike worked as a plaintiff-side employment lawyer, representing women who suffered discrimination in the workplace and whistleblowers who suffered retaliation. Most recently, he served as an Austin city attorney, where he represented the city in lawsuits against the State of Texas on behalf of immigrant families, firefighters, low-income renters, and constituents in support of common-sense gun regulations.

“As an educator Mike worked to fulfill the promise of the American Dream: the idea that everyone, no matter what family you were born into, no matter your wealth or status, has the opportunity to live a safe, prosperous and fulfilling life. And as a lawyer, he’s been an advocate for folks without a voice, fighting against unjust laws and holding employers accountable when they mistreat their workers.

“Mike wants to bring that same commitment, for opportunity and justice, to the people of the Texas 10th. Our goal is to run a people-powered campaign – no funding from corporate PACs, but lots of support from regular Texans who want their representative to fight for what matters most.” – Mike Siegel Campaign

Siegel has been endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Elizabeth Warren, AFL-CIO, Progressive Democrats of America, Sierra Club,  and Environment America.

“Mike Siegel is a civil rights lawyer, a former public-school teacher, and he has been on the right side of critical fights for our children, our planet, and for civil rights and social justice. We need Mike’s fighting spirit in Congress and I’m proud to endorse him.”

Senator Elizabeth Warren

Once elected, Siegel promises to focus on progressive policies such as healthcare for all, the Green New Deal, public education investments and police reform among others. He hopes to follow in the footsteps of former president Lyndon B. Johnson, who once held this seat and who signed Medicare into law. Siegel hopes to build on his legacy and expand Medicare to protect his community against closing rural hospitals.

Texas Congressional District 10 spans from the East Houston Suburbs through North Austin to Lake Travis.
