Legislator Compares Morality Of Abortion To Slavery

The thread began with a prompt from the Republicans against Trumpism’s Twitter account: “Can you be against abortions personally but still be pro-choice as a matter of law?”

Responders agreed resoundingly. Save for one.

Texas State Representative Matt Schaefer chimed in: “Replace the operative word with ‘slavery’ and see how it works.”

Another user, Tamoria Jones, challenged the statement: “Slavery is the right to own an individual as property whereas abortion deals with the right to privacy and to have ownership over one’[s] own body. How anyone would think this is an ok response is mind blowing.”

The recent vote by the Supreme Court to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade case has stirred controversy nationwide, amid a seemingly constant push to ban abortion in the Texas legislature.

Tensions are at an all-time high as demonstrators and activists take to the streets and the internet.

One Supreme Court Justice, Samuel Alito, described the Roe v. Wade case as “egregiously wrong.” He continues, “the inescapable conclusion is that a right to abortion is not deeply rooted in the Nation’s history and traditions.”
