Karl Rove, GOP veteran and Bush Jr’s lead advisor, said in a panel at the Texas Tribune festival, that the Texas’ abortion law is far too extreme. Rove pointed out that after the U.S. Supreme Court’s June decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, there are increasingly more Republicans that do not agree on extreme abortion laws.
Rove used the Kansas abortion referendum as and example of how it is posible to defeat an “extremist measure on abortion,” defining extreme as “essentially no abortion, no exceptions.” “Do you think Texas is too extremist?” Tribune CEO Evan Smith asked. “Yeah, I do. I think it’s gonna create a real problem for Republicans in the Legislature next year when they have to deal with it”, Rove said.
Their commentaries make reference to the Texas trigger law that was passed by the state legislature last year. That law banned abortion without exceptions for rape or incest and it autommatically went into effect after the Supreme Court’s decision.
