Infant Deaths Increases After Abortion Ban In Texas

After 10 years of decline, deaths of babies born in Texas increased after abortion ban.

Deaths of infants born in Texas increased 11.5 percent in 2022, after abortion after six weeks got banned by the state.

According to a report by Ars Technica, 2,000 infants died in Texas in 2022, an increment of 227 deaths compared to the previous year.

Between 2014 and 2021, infant deaths in Texas had fallen nearly 15%. The recent increment in deaths reversed the decline trend. The deaths related to severe genetic and birth defects are about 21.6 percent.

Abortion bans and restrictions are a factor to increase infant deaths, maternal deaths, and maternal suffering. “We all knew the infant mortality rate would go up because many of these terminations were for pregnancies that don’t turn into healthy normal kids,” Dr. Erika Werner, the chair of obstetrics and gynecology at Tufts Medical Center, told CNN. “It’s exactly what we all were concerned about.”

Medical and health organizations across the world support access to abortion, they consider that there is enough evidence to support this and that it is an essential health care.

14 states have banned abortions, with restrictions over six weeks and bans between 12 to 18 weeks.
