Amidst the chaos that occurred after the school shooting in Texas, where 19 kids and 2 adults lost their lives to an 18-year-old with a gun, Beto O’Rourke has called out Abbott for his laws regarding no gun control and his future attendance to the NRA Convention.
The annual National Rifle Association, to be hosted in Houston next Friday, has several politicians in its list of attendees, such as Attorney Ken Paxton, Senator Ted Cruz and the Governor of Texas himself, Greg Abbott. The date couldn’t be more controversial, less than a week after the mass shooting that occurred in a Texas primary school in Uvalde.
The shooter, now deceased after an encounter with police forces at the school, was an 18-year-old who bought two semi-automatic rifles legally on his birthday. He also allegedly shot his grandmother before heading to the school.
Texas is one of the states with the most relaxed laws regarding gun control and regulation. After a law that Abbott signed in 2021, Texans can go and buy arms with no background checks, license, or any type of regulation. The Governor has seen this as a matter of celebration for the state and has even encouraged citizens to buy more guns after Texas was placed in second place in gun ownership behind Texas.
On the contrary, his democrat adversary Beto O’Rourke has been adamant about the need to bring back regulations and background checks for buying and selling guns. He is not against gun ownership per se, but he believes regulation is required.
After Tuesday’s event, O’Rourke has expressed his condolences for the victims and their families, and also called Texan politicians to action to prevent events like this from repeating. He claimed gun regulation is necessary and that these events are not unpredictable catastrophes.
He also called out Greg Abbott and demanded that he cancel his attendance at the NRA convention on Friday, as he believes that it would be contradictory to the Governor’s speech of prayer and condolences to the victims of gun violence.
