AOC Dazzles Everyone with ‘Tax the Rich’ Met Gala Dress

The Met Gala is the sort of event where there’s always something to talk about. From impressive fashion garments to who was on Anna Wintour’s guest list, gossip is rarely scarce. This time we got to see strong political messaging in the form of a stunning white gown worn by no other than U.S. Representative for New York’s 14th congressional, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

“The medium is the message,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on her Instagram post where she posed alongside fashion designer Aurora James, “The time is now for childcare, healthcare, and climate action for all.”

She additionally explained how it was that she got invited to the exclusive event in the first place, after all, famous A-listers such as Angelia Jolie or Jennifer Aniston have never managed to score an invitation. “And yes, BEFORE anybody starts wilding out — NYC elected officials are regularly invited to and attend the Met due to our responsibilities in overseeing our city’s cultural institutions that serve the public. I was one of several in attendance.”

The far left-leaning politician added that she was “proud to work” with James, an activist and “sustainably focused Black woman immigrant designer” who began her fashion career at a flea market in Brooklyn; James also responded to the backlash on social media.

Ocasio-Cortez’s dress was designed by Aurora James, a fashion artist who began her career at a flea market in Brooklyn.

“Fashion at its best is a tool to express ourselves, share our cultural identities, and challenge ideas and norms,” James wrote on her Instagram account.

“As a Black woman, who also happens to be a fashion designer, activist (@15percentpledge) and small business owner — working with @aoc to create this dress and this message at this particular moment in time was incredibly important.”

James’ 15 Percent Pledge organization focuses on promoting black entrepreneurs, asking brands to pledge 15% of their shelf space to Black-owned businesses.
