Can Beto O’Rourke Beat Abbott for the Governor’s Seat in 2022? Latest Poll Reveals Virtual Tie

Beto O'Rourke

It has been a difficult year for the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott. Earlier this year, he failed miserably during the winter storm, as the power grid collapsed and millions of Texans were left stranded in the cold without power. People died. The cost of the cold wave and winter storm damages was projected to be over $20.4 billion.

Afterward, during COVID’s summer wave, thousands of people died in the Lone Star State as Greg refused to impose a mask mandate and fought every city, school, or business that tried one. He has also been very vocal on his stand against vaccine mandates. This has been a difficult year for Texans, and they know it.

In a poll released earlier today, his lead in the polls to extend for a third term his governorship has been cut to almost zero against former El Paso congressman Beto O’Rourke. Among Texas voters who went to the polls in 2020, he only leads O’Rourke 44% to 43%.

Abbott has been focused this year on moving his politics to the far right, to win the support of GOP voters, and to win the Republican Primary on March 1st. He enjoys a commanding, 51-percentage point lead among GOP voters. But he is facing a huge challenge convincing moderate voters to vote with him after the disastrous results he has delivered this year.

The poll, organized by the Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation in a partnership with the Baker Institute for Public Policy at Rice University, also showed Beto’s strong support with Hispanic voters, as he leads Abbott 49%-31% with this demographic.

It is still to be determined whether O’Rourke will run for Governor in 2022, but if he does, Beto will surely deliver Abbott and the GOP a good fight.

The poll also found, that despite ongoing criminal accusations of financial improprieties and claims of misuse of power by former employees, Attorney General Ken Paxton leads the Republican primary by a large margin among the most likely voters as he seeks a third term. Paxton leads 54 percent of the vote, followed by Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush (18%), former Texas Supreme Court Justice Eva Guzman (5%), and Fort Worth state Rep. Matt Krause (1%). Twenty-two percent of those polled were undecided.
