Texas Representative Defends Whipping of Haitians by Border Patrol

Images of Border Patrol officials on horseback shoving and whipping Haitian migrants back as they attempted to cross the Rio Grande into the United States have outraged Americans and cast doubt on President Biden’s decision to deport thousands of people who had been arriving en masse at a small Texas border town.

Democrats all over the United States have been vocal about their rejection of this migrant policy. Vice President Kamala Harris called the treatment “horrible” on Tuesday and said she planned to discuss it with Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas, who has launched an inquiry

Harris stated, “Human beings should never be abused that way.” “And that bothers me a great deal.”

Joining VicePresident Kamala on her outrage of this actions taken by the Border Patrol, are Jamie Raskin of Maryland, the chairman of the civil rights subcommittee; Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida; and members of the progressive group known as the “Squad” — Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, alongside Representative Carolyn B. Maloney, Democrat of New York and the chairwoman of the oversight committee, have addressed a letter to Troy A. Miller, the acting commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The video and photographs show the Border Patrol officers whipping Haitian migrants, who were forced to leave their homeland because of social circumstances. White men on horseback with lariats are shown pursuing, shouting, and swearing at defenseless Black asylum seekers who had been fleeing Haiti, to what they believed was safety. Turns out it wasn’t.

But even as America got together to protest the actions of the Border Patrol agents, some other politicians across the U.S. think otherwise. This is the case for Rep. Henry Cuellar (TX-28), who defended the actions taken by the border patrol:

“Border Patrol has had those horse brigades for a while … What are they supposed to do, just stand there and let everybody come in?”

Henry Cuellar is on the hot seat, as he is facing reelection next year and a very tough primary. In the last election, he was barely able to win against 26-year old Jessica Cisneros, and she is coming back stronger this election to contest his seat. She was pretty vocal against Mr. Cuellar’s declarations regarding Haitian migrants and reminded him of his previous controversial votes.

Whether or not these Trump-like declarations after Mr. Cuellar for the next election are yet to be seen, but he is sparking outrage inside the Democratic Party and in Texas.
