Tesla Building A Mega-battery That Could Save Texas Power Grid

Texas power grid problems might be coming to an end soon, but that won’t be thanks to ERCOT. While at least a dozen of ERCOT’s board members were forced to resign after the recent power outages in the state, Tesla, owned by Texas resident Elon Musk, was already working on a secret project that is sure to lend a powerful hand to the overcharged power grid.

Gambit Energy Storage LLC, A Tesla subsidiary, is quietly building a more than 100-megawatt energy storage project in Angleton, a small town 40 miles from Houston. A battery like this could power around 20,000 homes during peak season. While the information has not been announced yet, public documents confirmed the company’s role. As of today no representative from Tesla has responded to any inquiries about the project, but according to Warren Lasher, senior director of system planning at Ercot, Tesla’s project could be running this June.

During the power outages that hit Texas last month, Musk took to his Twitter account to mock the Electric Reliability Council of Texas for not being reliable.

While Tesla is known for making electric cars let’s not forget that its official mission is to “accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy,” making its incursion into bigger energy industry projects a very smart move. A winning opportunity after what Texas just went through.
