The only chance Progressives have in a Texas statewide race this year is Chrysta Castañeda for Railroad Commissioner. Castañeda won the Democratic Primary Run-off to challenge James Wright in the Texas Railroad Commissioner Election in November.

Castañeda hopes to bring an environmental perspective to the Texas Railroad Commission, which oversees oil and gas. She hopes to make the commission enforce environmental laws that are already on the books to protect Texas against the bad practices of the industry.

The Railroad Commission of Texas was originally established in 1891to prevent discrimination in railroad charges and establish reasonable tariffs. Their mission has evolved to provide stewardship of natural resources and the environment in Texas. It is the oldest regulatory agency in the state. There are three commissioners serving in staggered terms. Castañeda seeks to fill the seat of Ryan Sitton, who lost in the Republican primary in March.
