Teacher In Texas Dismissed For Assigning Anne Frank’s Graphic Adaptation

A Texas middle school teacher was fired after assigning an Illustrated version of Anne Frank’s diary to her class, reports The Guardian.

Apparently, the eight-grade school teacher was sent home on Wednesday after reading a passage from Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation where Frank reflected on her own genitals. In the original written version of Anne Frank’s Diary, she wrote about sexuality, but these parts were edited out in subsequent reprints.

Officials from Hamshire-Fannett ISD said that the teacher presented “inappropriate” material to the students and sent an email to parents on Tuesday saying that the book will no longer be read, and that the teacher will communicate their apologies to them.

“As you may be aware, following concerns regarding curricular selections in your student’s reading class, a substitute teacher has been facilitating the class since Wednesday, September 13, 2023,” said the district to parents in another email.

The firing comes after Gov. Greg Abbot signed legislation in 2021 that limited how educators can teach race and gender. Texas is the state that has banned more books in the nation, with more than 430 banned books in schools.“No teacher should be fired for teaching the Diary of Anne Frank to middle school students,” Clay Robison, a spokesperson with the Texas State Teachers Association told The Guardian. “Teachers are dedicated to teaching the truth, the whole truth,”.
