Austin ISD Welcomes Families To Showcase

Austin’s Palmer Event Center was bustling with activity Saturday as families from across the capital city stopped by to check out Austin Independent School District’s educational opportunities. Principals, teachers, and staff from the district’s 117 elementary, middle, and high school campuses were on hand to help parents learn about the opportunities available at their schools.

“Most families in Austin aren’t aware of all the opportunities they have for their children at Austin ISD. We are doing this to showcase all the fantastic options we offer to literally every child,” said Interim Superintendent Dr. Anthony Mays. “From academics to after-school programs, pre-K to getting a college associate degree for free, from sports to fine arts, there is so much available to enrich a child’s educational experience and prepare them for the future.”

Saturday morning’s event featured student music and dance performances including Ballet Folklorico from McBee and Hart Elementary Schools, step teams from Campbell and Oak Springs Elementary Schools, Webb Middle School’s mariachi and drumline, O. Henry Middle School’s jazz band, dance teams from Liberal Arts & Science Academy (LASA) and Covington Fine Arts Academy, and choral performances from Dobie Middle School and Blazier Elementary. The district’s Discovery Dome, a mobile planetarium, delighted children and adults alike with a tour of the cosmos.

“I’m glad we got to come and see what Austin ISD has available,” said one parent. “My son is going into high school, so it was nice to be able to learn more about the opportunities they have.”
