Can COVID-19 Cause Erectile Dysfunction?

The myth that the COVID-19 vaccine causes erectile dysfunction may be false, but studies have found that the virus itself does pose a risk of the disorder.

Since the coronavirus first became a concern, health officials have investigated potential long-term effects the virus may result in. However, it was not until recently that researchers found a link between the virus and the male reproductive system.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, there are three factors that may lead to erectile dysfunction:

1.  Vascular effects. Hyperinflammation caused by the virus may create blockages or narrowed passages limiting blood supply to the penis.

2.  Psychological impact. Stress, anxiety, and depression, which can be caused by the pandemic or virus, have been found to be linked to the disorder.

3.  Overall health deterioration. Poor health often attributes to ED, and COVID-19 can potentially cause a number of health issues.

While it is unknown exactly if COVID-19 impacts male fertility, several studies have found lower sperm counts and lower levels of testosterone in males who were infected with the virus. It is unknown if the low sperm count is temporary to long-term.
